0186 THE ART OF THE ISLAMIC TILE                                    £40.00
Gerard Degeorge & Yves Porter, Flammarion, France, October 2002, English text, 288pp, 394 colour illustrations, cloth, dustwrapper
Quite simply, this is the finest book on Islamic tiles we have ever seen! It covers every type and style from the 9th century lustre tiles of Samarra to the Qajar tiles of modern Iran, not forgetting Iznik, Moorish, Indian, and Zellij tiles on the way. This is not just a history of Islamic tiles, but also a technical guide too, describing the many methods used to create such beautiful tiles. It is also a fabulous pictorial record of the rich heritage of Islamic tile and tile mosaic, individually and en masse in architecture. RECOMMENDED!

0820 HISTORIC AND OBSOLETE ROOFING TILE                 £59.95
Vincent H Hobson & Melvin Mann, Remai Publishing Co Inc, USA, 2002, 254pp, 693 colour illus of historic tile, many further colour and b & w illus in text, plus reproductions from historic catalogues, quarto paperback
This amazing book sets out to document the incredible range of roofing tile designs created in the USA during the past 150 years or so. Originally written as a resource guide for the preservation of historic buildings, it has become a ‘Bible’ of roof tile design and use, with a far wider appeal than just conservation architects. Over 700 dimensioned colour photographs of the tiles make identifcation, even of unmarked tiles, so simple; whilst the history of the companies involved and the development of the roofing tile make for fascinating reading.
