The mosaic depicting the Battle of Alexander
represents one of the greatest masterpieces of ancient art and is world-renowned
for its depiction of Alexander's features. A search to identify the
original source of the picture has been in course since its discovery in
the House of the Faun, Pompeii, in the 1830s. Archaeological
investigations have failed to identify which particular battle it depicts and to
whom the it should be attributed.
New evidence presented in this book puts forward
a bold hypothesis that the mosaic is based on a "tablet" by the most famous
painter of antiquity, Apelles. The new photography undertaken specially
for this book presents new evidenc from the work's most important
details.
