We hope you have had a good break this summer and that you found plenty of sunshine!  It has certainly been a hot summer here in England.  For those of you who don't know, Littlehampton is a seaside town on the south coast of England, enjoying long sandy beaches and holding a number of sunshine records.  We are situated only 400 yards from the beach, so if you are ever in the area, why not pay us a visit?  We can even arrange accommodation, given a bit of notice!

Now to the latest books:

tiles:

This catalogue of a recent exhibition at the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne, France contains a number of very interesting tiles. All taken from the museum’s own collections, they include several Islamic tile designs not illustrated elsewhere. Features tiles from Iznik, Kutahya, and North Africa.

0245 BUDAPEST IN DETAIL    £69.00

Awarded the prize for ‘Most Beautiful Book’ at the 1999 Frankfurt Book Fair, this is a fabulous look at the (mainly Art Nouveau) architecture and interiors of the Hungarian capital. There are chapters on Wrought and Cast Iron, Carved Wood, Architectural Ceramics, Window Design and Decorative Glass, each with a first rate English text. The various sections are available separately as paperback books as follows:

0245a Carved Wood, Architectural Ceramics and Window Design    £17.50
0245b Wrought Iron and Cast Iron    £17.50
0245c Decorative Glass    £17.50

0385 CERAMIC ART TILE FOR THE HOME    £24.95

DeBorah Goletz, Schiffer, USA, 2001, 160pp, illus in colour throughout, paperback

This is essentially a record of modern American art tile, featuring the work of dozens of contemporary potters. The tiles (and a few mosaics) are stunning as are the room settings in which they are mainly displayed. A full index of the artists and contact details make this an invaluable tool for interior designers seeking the best in modern tile design, and an important record for tile collectors of the future.

1933 SAUDI ARAMCO WORLD: May/June 2001: Zillij in Fez    £2.50

Various authors, Aramco Services Co, USA, 2001, 48pp, booklet/magazine

An edition of this magazine with a 14 page feature article on the Zillij, or cut tile work of Morocco. Includes a unique, illustrated description of making and fixing Zillij,.

0384 CATALINA ISLAND POTTERY AND TILE, 1927-1937, Island Treasures    £34.95

Carole Coates, Schiffer, USA, 2001, 176pp (landscape), illus throughout in colour + some b & w historic photographs, cloth

A detailed history and study of the tiles and pottery made on Catalina Island off the coast of California during the 20s and 30s is long overdue. Here we have just such a book, illustrated in stunning colour with virtually every known example of the pottery’s output. There is also a guide to prices (in US$) and a section on ‘Catalina style’ pots and tiles, including recent ‘copies’ and ‘reproductions’.

2321 WELLER, ROSEVILLE AND RELATED ZANESVILLE ART POTTERY AND TILE    £24.95

Betty Purviance Ward & Nancy N Schiffer, Schiffer, USA, 2000, 168pp, illus throughout in colour, boards

This is essentially an updated version of four volumes published between 1968 and 1972. Most of the illustrations are taken straight from the original books, but current market prices have been added. The text has not been substantially revised and contains some information which has been superseded by later research. This is still a good guide to Zanesville tiles though.

In the few years it has been running, the Prix Picassiette has established itself as the leading international showcase for modern mosaics and mosaicists. With sections catering for the professional, the amateur and the novice, the competition draws a wide spectrum of differing design and illustrates the way mosaic design is going.
