We hope you have had a good break this summer
and that you found plenty of sunshine! It has certainly been a hot
summer here in England. For those of you who don't know, Littlehampton is
a seaside town on the south coast of England, enjoying long sandy beaches and
holding a number of sunshine records. We are situated only 400 yards from
the beach, so if you are ever in the area, why not pay us a visit? We can
even arrange accommodation, given a bit of notice!
Now to the latest books:

modern American art tile, featuring the work of dozens of contemporary potters.
The tiles (and a few mosaics) are stunning as are the room settings in which
they are mainly displayed. A full index of the artists and contact details make
this an invaluable tool for interior designers seeking the best in modern tile
design, and an important record for tile collectors of the future.

Carole Coates, Schiffer, USA, 2001,
176pp (landscape), illus throughout in colour + some b & w historic
photographs, cloth
A detailed history and study of the
tiles and pottery made on Catalina Island off the coast of California during the
20s and 30s is long overdue. Here we have just such a book, illustrated in
stunning colour with virtually every known example of the pottery’s output.
There is also a guide to prices (in US$) and a section on ‘Catalina style’ pots
and tiles, including recent ‘copies’ and ‘reproductions’.
2321 WELLER, ROSEVILLE AND RELATED
ZANESVILLE ART POTTERY AND TILE £24.95
Betty Purviance Ward & Nancy N
Schiffer, Schiffer, USA, 2000, 168pp, illus throughout in colour,
boards
This is essentially an updated
version of four volumes published between 1968 and 1972. Most of the
illustrations are taken straight from the original books, but current market
prices have been added. The text has not been substantially revised and contains
some information which has been superseded by later research. This is still a
good guide to Zanesville tiles though.
