1213 LUCIO ORSONI: MOSAICI £8.99

Text by Peter Fischer, Vianello Libri, Italy, 2000, full Italian and English texts, 44pp, illus throughout in colour, cloth with embossed ‘mosaic’ dustwrapper

One of the last projects of Peter Fischer before his untimely death was to compose a ‘poem in prose’ to the beauty and symbolism of Lucio Orsoni and his mosaics. This has now been published together with superb photographs taken specially by Norbert Heyl and is a fitting epitaph to a lifetime studying mosaic.

1510 ORPHEUS, THE MAGICIAN £19.95

Füsun Tülek, Arkeoloji Sanat Yayinlari, Turkey, 1998, full Turkish and English texts, 72pp + 24 plates containing 30 colour + 16 b & w illus + 11 drwgs in text, paperback

A study of the iconography of various Orpheus mosaics, relating to the Christianisation of the Orpheus theme. The mosaics at Jerusalem, Urfa, Adana, Tarsus, Polatlı-Kayabaşı, Pamphylia-Seleukeia, Cos, and Miletus are illustrated and discussed. The illustrations could have been better, but this is an interesting study.

Various authors, ‘Museum with no Frontiers’, 2000, 224pp, 182 colour illus + 43 monument maps, paperback

13103 MARMI ANTICHI E PIETRE DURE £25.00

Edited by Dario del Bufalo, Mario Congedo Editore, Italy, 2000, Italian text, 162pp, 3 b & w + 26 colour illus + 10 plates showing 80 sample marbles, large paperback

The greater part of this book is taken up with facsimiles of some of the earliest literature on marble and pietre dure in the Italian language. There are also chapters on marble cutting/forming techniques and tools and a very useful ‘identity parade’ with good illustrations of some 80 different types of marble.

Well, that's it for this time, have a great summer!

Regards

Chris
