0175 ART AND SOCIETY IN FOURTH-CENTURY BRITAIN: Villa Mosaics in Context £28.00

Sarah Scott, Oxford University School of Archaeology, Monograph No 53, 2000, 192pp, 75 b & w illus/drwgs and maps, paperback
Mosaics are often studied in detachment from their original surroundings, usually as a ‘fine art’. They were however, mainly created to complement a living/ worshipping space and this book seeks to put mosaics back into this context. The illustrations, sadly, leave something to be desired, being poorly reproduced and indistinct in many cases, but don’t let this detract from the book’s usefulness.

0628 FANTASIEVOLLES PFLASTER UND MOSAIK £14.95

Heidi Howcroft, Christa Brand & Nik Barlo jr, Callwey, Germany, 2001, German text, 96pp, 97 colour illus, boards
This excellent book concentrates on the use of cobbles, natural stone, pebbles and ceramics to create decorative ‘mosaic’ pathways and sculpture for the garden. It focuses on the design aspects rather than the actual techniques involved, but does include a useful ‘table of materials’. Recommended.
