General Description
Go to Top | McIntyre Main Page
McIntyre PORCELAIN AND STONEWARE TILES are formed from wet clay, hand finished and hand glazed and single fired to 2400 degrees F. Each tile has a flat back and cushioned edge. Custom tiles may be produced at other temperatures and with other processes.

Standard Specifications
McIntyre Tile conforms to ANSI 137.1 as Special Purpose Tile. Our tiles are produced, graded and packed to our stated specifications. When requested by the purchaser prior to production, a Master Grade Certificate may be issued certifying compliance with properties mutually agreed upon by purchaser and ourselves. Generally, a Master Grade Certificate should be requested when the tile is specified for a commercial floor or any exterior use.

How To Specify
Glazed, high fired_____________(specify Porcelain or Stoneware) tile in actual size______________(specify actual size) and color_______________(specify glaze name) as manufactured by McIntyre Tile Company, Healdsburg, California. Tile shall have a flat back, a cushioned edge, and shall be fully vitrified (absorption less than 3%). Tile shall conform to ANSI 137.1 as Special Purpose Tile.
Allow 4-6 weeks from time of purchase order to delivery. Sales Terms are 1/2 down with order, balance COD.

Availability
McIntyre maintains an inventory of some tiles and extruded shapes at the factory in Healdsburg, California, available for immediate shipment. Most tile is made to order and therefore subject to production limitations and order volume fluctuations. For purposes of specification, a lead time of 4-5 weeks is sufficient in most cases. Check with the factory or your local distributor for verification of delivery.

Color Variation
Go to Top | McIntyre Main Page
Most McIntyre glaze colors vary from tile to tile, some more than others. These variations are intentional, resulting from our particular production methods and our choice of raw materials. When specifying a McIntyre glaze, always work from a sampling of 3 or more tiles which represent the range of color you can expect on the job.

Slip Resistance
If specified when ordered, McIntyre will add an abrasive grit to any glazed tile for use on floors. The grit is either white (a pure silica) or black (a nickel alloy). The abrasives are most commonly used on shower floors and commercial floor applications.

Frost Proof
McIntyre Tile has a water absorption of less than 3% (vitreous) and is suitable for use in pools and spas for both interior and exterior applications.

Crazing
Crazing refers to the hair-line cracks which occur in the glaze surface of some tiles. Certain glazes produced by McIntyre Tile are intentionally crazed for decorative effect. To minimize the possibility for staining, the factory recommends the use of natural gray grout. Penetrating sealers or grout releases may also be used per the manufacturer's instructions. To highlight the crazing, colored stains may be rubbed into the surface before sealing.

Clay Bodies
Go to Top | McIntyre Main Page
PORCELAIN
A very fine grained, white and very plastic clay body with rare iron spotting. The tile body texture is visible under clear glazes. Porcelain is the best choice for bright and clear colors.
STONEWARE
A coarse and groggy brown clay body with iron spotting (spit-outs). Best for earthy colors.

Installation
Installation procedures should conform to the TCA "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation" (current edition). The layout should be evenly spaced on each surface to maximize the use of full tiles. Grout joints should align. Tile should be set in a level and square 12" module allowing for a 1/4" joint throughout. Due to dimensional variations, joints may vary up to 1/16". A narrower grout spacing can be used, however it may result in a more time consuming installation and accentuate tile irregularities. Avoid grouping tiles of the same hue or value. Choose stacks of tiles from several different cartons to achieve the best overall blend of color.

Murals
McIntyre murals should be laid out prior to installation to verify the spacing and fit. The tiles surrounding the mural should be carefully chosen to blend with those in the mural itself. Install murals at the same time as surrounding tiles to assure correct fit.

Colored Grouts Vs. Natural
The factory recommends natural gray grout for all of its glazes to minimize staining from colored grout pigments. Caution is especially recommended with matte glazes. Test a loose piece of tile before grouting your installation. To reduce staining, use a Grout Release before grouting. Test before using.

Maintenance
Go to Top | McIntyre Main Page
Minimal maintenance is required. Mild soaps should be sufficient for cleaning. For persistent stains, stronger cleaners (even mild acids) may be used on the tile, but care must be taken to avoid contact with the grout.

Glazed Paver
McIntyre Glazed Paver is similar to the standard 12x12 tile except that the edges are generously cushioned, minor surface marks are acceptable, greater deflection is allowable for firsts tiles and the price is reduced. These are intended for use where more informality is desired. Maximum deflection is 5/32" over span of tile. Maximum off-square of cushioned edge is 1/4" on full tile. Recommended joint size is increased to 3/8".

California Arts And Crafts Series
This tile series has a gently textured surface and greater variation of edges. More irregularity is acceptable. Tiles are thicker and heavier than standard tiles. Special glazes from the period are featured, some of which are crazed.

High-Fired Metallic Glazes
These tiles feature actual metal on the glaze surface. The glazes are non-toxic in manufacture and usage. The glaze surface is sensitive to oxidation and must be protected. It is pre-sealed at the factory and must be re-sealed after grouting. Periodically the sealer must be renewed to protect the metallic quality. These glazes are NOT suitable for areas where abrasion, water andtor chemicals are present. PRE-TEST ANY SEALERS OR GROUT RELEASES BEFORE GENERAL USE! Some products will discolor metal surface. McIntyre Tile will not be responsible for discoloration of this tile from chemicals.
