Tiles On The Web: How To Tips
From Pat Wehrman
Creating A Tessalation: A Worked Example
- Head contour determines shape.
- Flip right and slide down center line until there is enough room for leg.
- Flip around each corner of square to get intersection points.
- Divide in equal sections.

Frog Tile
ca. 3" x 3 1/2"
- Fold and copy to get a full piece, detail drawing. Can be enlarged or reduced
on a copy machine.*
- Test with clay, make adjustments.
- Pour press molds.
- Plan where to put corners.
- A = Straight down the middle.
- B = Across the widest full section.
- Use the guidelines to make 1/2's and 1/4's.
*I usually plan tiles to fit the space. A full pattern (panel) this size would
be about 6" square and be composed of 12 tiles (4 whole frogs and 8 half frogs).
The shrinkage from wet size to fired size provides space for grout lines.
More information on the principles of tessalation can be found in the book Escher
On Escher: Exploring The Infinite. See the
Design section of the Booklist under "Escher, M.C." for full bibliographic information.
