"How-To" Tips for Handpainted Tiles
Some of the projects I have worked on called for the multiple reproduction of one or more patterns. To keep production costs down, and to expedite the project, I silk-screen the outline of the designs onto pre-glazed tiles. I make my own screens using the traditional photo-reproduction process. Once I have the design on screen, I mix the glaze I want to use as my outline color. This is usually a low fire Mayco or Duncan 06 black, blended with a little extra CMC, and some water soluble wax. The next step is to "register" the design on the tile, and mark the tile placement so that the next tile to be screened is in the same place as the first. The design is then screened on to the tile and allowed to dry. The next step is to lay in the colors I have chosen for that particular design. Once they are dry, tiles are then fired. This process is an adaptation of that used by the original Malibu Potteries factory.
