DE NEDERLANDSE TEGEL / THE DUTCH TILE
Jan Pluis
in collaboration with Dr. Daniël Hanekuijk, Piet Bolwerk and Jan van Loo.

The book DE NEDERLANDSE TEGEL / THE DUTCH TILE, decors en benamingen 1570-1930 / designs and names 1570-1930 will be published in June 1997.

Jan Pluis (born 1937), the well known author of a number of definitive works on Dutch wall tiles, has brought together in this, his latest book, the fruits of many years research in the field. Over thirty years of intensive study and the documentation of over 60.000 tiles from as far afield as Southern Spain and Russia has gone into the production of this essential reference work.

This book is the first to provide as complete a summary of the Dutch tile from 1570 - 1930 as is possible, treating the various periods of tile production on an equal footing.

Following a detailed introduction, which includes, amongst other themes, a description of the sources of tile design, the book continues with a catalogue of about 2600 black and white illustrations arranged systematically to aid identification and location of tile designs. To simplify and facilitate identification of the large group of 850 or so ornamental designs and about 450 border tile designs and border-corner designs, these has been grouped according to their basic geometric arrangement, this being rendered schematically at the top of each page. As a result the user requires no previous knowledge to locate a particular design. The next section of the book covers all known border designs appearing on individual tiles and includes information on dating and place of manufacture together with what designs were used with each border or corner motif. The book also contains a chapter illustrating 124 tile pictures arranged in a similar fashion to the section on individual tiles. 134 colour illustrations on 64 pages throw further light on the way tiles were utilized and include a number of reproductions of original pattern books.

Terminology and glossary

Over the years a number of different terms have been used in the trade and by the collectors to define such things as corner motifs and borders. This book has sought to create a definitive terminology distilled from 41 archival sources. An illustrated glossary of technical terms with 75 entries provides a much needed insight into various aspects of production, faults and related topics.

This book was conceived by the Committee of the Dutch Tile Museum and its Society of Friends who saw the need for a systematic method of classifying Dutch tiles. The resultant work will be of great value to all, from the humble collector to the great museum, in enabling the accurate description of accession records in a standardized form. The whole introduction and the different supplying paragraphs are translated into English, so that the book is also usable in foreign countries.

DE NEDERLANDSE TEGEL / THE DUTCH TILE is bound to become the definitive work on Dutch tin-glazed Delftware tiles and will be an indispensable aid for the cataloguing of tiles in private and museum collections.

For the tile collector, museum curator and historian alike this is the most important book of reference and authority yet written on this subject.
