Tegel 25: English Summaries with Illustrations

The Foundation's main goal is to excite the interest for the tile collection and the activities of the Dutch Tile Museum (Nederlands Tegelmuseum) in Otterlo, The Netherlands and to give it her full support.

In addition to the personal assistance that is given to the Museum, the Foundation seeks to collect knowledge as much as possible on all aspects related to collecting tiles. She wants to make this knowledge available to her members.

Each last Saturday of September the annual meeting of the Foundation takes place in Otterlo or at another location in the Netherlands (alternately); lectures on different tile subjects are mostly combined with a tile exhibition or another tile related special event.

Each year in September, an annual, called TEGEL is edited (in Dutch) and contains 6 to 8 articles on various tile subjects written by members or sympathizers of the Foundation; it counts 48 to 56 pages and includes multiple black & white and color illustrations. In order to enable foreign members to understand the subjects described, starting with TEGEL 25 (September 1997), an English summary will be appended to each article. The annual is distributed during the annual meeting to members who have paid their subscription for the current year; those who are unable to attend the annual meeting, will receive it by mail.

In February and early September a Newsletter is published (in Dutch) by the secretariat of the Foundation including the invitation letter and the agenda of the annual meeting, information on local exhibitions, requests from members, publicity, communications of the committee to the members and the bi-annual Bulletin of the European Ceramic Tiles Circle (E.C.T.C.) which is another initiative of the Foundation.

Members of the Foundation have free entrance to the Dutch Tile Museum in Otterlo upon presentation of their membership card.

In the Museum there are some special "Show-windows of the Friends". In these show-windows, exhibitions of tiles out of the collections of the Friends are set up periodically.

The subscription amounts to €16,00 per year. This amount is entirely allocated to the activities of the Foundation. Subscription can be e-mailed to the treasurer at:

vrienden.tegelmuseum@tiscali.nl

Postal giro account for the Netherlands is 1696700. Payment to the treasurer during the first week of January on one's own initiative will be highly appreciated. Foreign members are invited to pay the subscription cash during the annual meeting or by sending an Eurocheque or a Credit Card number to the treasurer.

The members can contribute each year an extra amount for the "Donation fund"; if one pays more than the annual subscription fee and explicitly mentions "donation" on his payment form, the excess will be deposited in the Donation fund. This fund is used to purchase special tiles, books and educational material that are offered to the Museum.

There are still some TEGEL publications of previous years available. They can be bought during the annual meeting at €4,50 per annual (up to 1998, except 1993) or €7,00 (1993, 1999 and later) or can be ordered from the Museum at following address:

It is the result of twelve years of work of the Nomenclature Committee of the Foundation who studied intensively and classified all known Dutch tiles, their history, their corner motifs, ornamental designs, ... It counts 696 pages, ±2600 black and white and 134 color illustrations. This is a high-class document for every one who is interested in and working with Dutch tiles.

Today the Foundation has over 500 members in several European countries including Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark and England but also in the United States, Canada and Japan.
