BACKGROUND OF DELFT AND NOTABLE PEOPLE
'Snapshots of life in Delft'

Delft is a name that resonates in the fields of pottery- ceramics-majolica-Delftware and tiles. Delft tiles and Dutch tiles have become inextricably linked in popular usage, but as discussed in the "Dutch Tiles: Introduction" section: "Tiles were only a part of the Delft output, but the fame of the 'Delft blue' pottery was such that the name of Delft became synonymous with Dutch tiles." We are here to enjoy ourselves, however, and for present purposes we will take whatever Delft has to offer.

Nieuwe Kerk

Delft is a delight. Wander along the little streets and along the canals to get the flavour of the town. Buy a tourist map; buy booklets; sit at one of the cafes on the Markt (Market Square) in the centre of town and read them , while you also enjoy a beer or a coffee and sample the little poffertjes or those nice big pancakes. You will see in the centre of the Markt a statue of Hugo Grotius; at one end of the Square you see the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) where Grotius is buried, and at the other end you see the Stadhuis (Town Hall).
